The Cornerless (aka guitar shaped) Fiddle by Don Rickert Musical Instruments is designed to be high performance fiddle rather than an orchetral violin
The instrument is a beautiful cornerless design approximating the dimensions of a standard violin or fiddle; aka a “guitar-shaped” or “Chanot style”. The instrument also has very cool early Baroque-style "C-shape" sound holes.
The unique shape and sound holes makes this loud and powerful fiddle a visual attention getter!
This very well-bulit instrument, with the absence of corner blocks, produces a well—balanced but sonorous (loud), slightly dark and generally focused sound, but with more audible bass overtones that a regular violin. In other words, even with an extremely low string height (optional), this baby puts out exactly the sound favored by many fiddlers. In other words, it is super-easy to play, loud, “bassy” but not “muddy.”
Varnish is traditional hand-rubbed oil (old Italian style method), which gives it an old school look.
This type of fiddle is very popular with traditional fiddlers in most genres.
