Product Description

Most bowed string players are at least a little bit familiar with the restrictions placed on Pernambuco wood by Brazil. This extradinary bow, actually made in Brazil, is as legal as it  gets. It is also one of the most under priced genuine pernambuco master bows available, coraposo-logo.pngsting only about the same as a high performance carbon fiber bow. This bow is easily equivalent to a German bow costing many times more. It is a really great bow for fiddle as well as violin.

Raposo bows are made 100% in Brazil, out of the best old pernambuco. Pernambuco wood, the heartwood of the Pau Brazil tree (botanical name is Caesalpinha echinata). Francois Tourte, who gets the credit for inventing the post-Baroque reverse-camber modern bow, ultimately chose pernambuco due to its high stiffness, resistance to warping and low weight. Pernambuco became the standard material for high-quality post-Baroque bows (made primarily from snakewood).

The Pau Brazil tree is an endangered wood and has been since the 1600s, at least. Not only is there a moratorium on illegally-sourced pernambuco (The International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative USA), but it is also illegal to import illegally-sourced wood in the U.S. (see The U.S. Lacey Act and The U.S. Lacey Act: Changing the face of Global Wood Trade).

Brazilian born, Marco Raposo studied bow making at the University of New Hampshire, in the United States, and decided to establish his workshop in the high mountains of Brazil's Atlantic Forest, in the village of Domingos Martins - ES, home of the precious Pernambuco wood - Pau-Brasil. Marco Raposo Bows, established in 1995, manufactures the finest quality bows for violin, viola, cello and bass, for professionals and advanced students. Their goal is to assure quality to customers and to protect the environment. The company operates a sizable production facility and manages a large neighboring area of forested land, which will eventually serve as a perpetual resource for the enterprise. They maintain a policy of sustainable development and work closely with Brazilian forestry officials to ensure that it will continue to grow in an environmentally sound manner.

In addition to their conservation efforts, Marco Raposo Bows has acquired a large quantity of old Pau-Brazil wood, reclaimed from old Brazilian colonial farm fences. This reclaimed wood is the highest quality imaginable and has been naturally air-dried for a century or more. The very special bows made from this old wood are shaped by the hands of expert craftsmen, trained with well-known bow-makers working in the German and French tradition. The extra care and attention to detail they employ results in bows of superior quality. The performance of these ”new” Raposo bows is nothing short of extraordinary, and at a quite reasonable price. Choice of nickel or silver fittings.
