Over the past decade, D. Rickert Musical Instruments has made many models of travel / backpacker violins and fiddles. Many of our designs have endured the test of time. The most popular travel fiddle we have ever sold is the Mountaineer, now in its fourth revision and called the Mountaineer IV. The second best seller has been the Neil Gow 22XL.
Developing cases that strike a good balance between size and instrument protection has always been a challenge. Among our first cases for such instruments were made from converting fly fishing rod tube cases. We moved on to other options, as we could not fit the instruments into the cases once they were lined with sufficient shock-absorbing padding. As we continuously improved our instruments based on customer feedback, we made design changes in the instruments, including less neck angle, a lower bridge and smaller (but still effective) chin rests. We were also able to make the shoulder rest adapter mechanism smaller. All of these small design changes have brought us back to custom fly rod cases. We can now fit our skinnier travel fiddles (i.e. the Mountaineer III and Neil Gow 22XL) into one of these new cases.
The Globetrotter Travel and Backpacker Violin 4” Case is the right size for our Mountaineer series Backpacker fiddles, the Neil Gow XL type travel violins as well as our soon-to-be announced revolutionary Mountain Lion Backpacker and Travel Violin.
Note: The new Mountain Lion will cost almost twice as much as Mountaineer, if that is a consideration determining whether or not you choose to wait for its release.
